Dr. Alan Kacin is Professor of Physiotherapy at the Department of Physiotherapy at the University of Ljubljana (UL ZF).
He is a research associate at the Institute of Pathophysiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana (UL MF) and specializes in exercise science and kinesiotherapy for musculoskeletal disorders. He has more than 20 years of experience in teaching and training undergraduate, master and doctoral students in physiotherapy, other health sciences and medicine. His research interests include physiotherapy, exercise physiology, orthopedic medicine and rehabilitation, ergonomics and sport and exercise science. He is the founder and since 2010 also the head of the physiotherapy laboratory at the Faculty of Health Sciences.
After completing his bachelor’s degree in physiotherapy at UL ZF (1993-1997), as a young researcher he took part in doctoral studies abroad in the field of exercise physiology under extreme working conditions (high altitude climate and muscle ischemia) at the Faculty of Science of the University of Portsmouth in the UK (2001-2005). As part of the postdoctoral project ARRS (2007-2008), he embarked on a new research direction at UL ZF, namely the investigation of the effects of blood-flow restricted exercise training on skeletal muscle function in healthy people and people with joint impairments. In recent years, his research has focused primarily on investigating the mechanisms of muscle inhibition in acute and chronic impairments of lower limb and spinal impairments and on developing new physiotherapy techniques for the treatment of muscle weakness.
